Gdansk City Gallery

The Gdansk City Gallery is a municipal institution of culture comprising three branches: the Gdansk City Gallery 1 (GGM1) in Piwna Street operating since the establishment of the Gallery on March 17, 2009, the Günter Grass Gdansk Gallery (4G) at the corner of Szeroka and Grobla I Streets and the Gdansk City Gallery (GGM2) in Powroznicza Street.

These three different exhibition spaces serve the need to promote local artists as well as establish ties with foreign artists and institutions. The circulation of international art has enriched the artistic and cultural capacity of Tri-City thanks to the institution’s involvement in numerous large scale projects, such as: Narracje – a periodic festival launched three years ago focusing on taking inter-media art out of the gallery and introducing it into the outer public space, Art Line – in which the focal point is mutual cooperation between artistic institutions in the Southern Baltic region, and artMuse – an international enterprise promoting audio-visual projects to name just a few.

The profile of 4G results from close cooperation with Günter  Grass in order to promote his literary and artistic oeuvre at his birthplace – Gdansk. Both polish and keen foreign visitors are familiarized with his works through regular exhibitions held at the venue. The yearly Grassomania festival – another GGM project – is the result of the unfading interest in this Nobel Prize winner. It offers a variety of highlights, from exhibitions, performances, readings to interactive projects encouraging the viewer to comprehensively participate in the cultural life of the city. Apart from the events focused on Günter Grass, 4G regularly hosts the Gdansk Biennale of Art. The event, being an open competition enterprise, is aimed ta professional artists in order to select the most promising, including the youngest generation of the Academy of Fine Arts graduates.

GGM1 concentrates on cooperation between young Polish and international artists under the umbrella of the “Dialog” project. Regular double-exhibits of artists, whose artistic paths had not previously crossed, in most cases prove the creativity and openness to discussion among artistic circles of various national backgrounds. The Gallery familiarizes  viewers with the current trends in the artistic life of Tri-City and Poland by organizing  exhibitions  of individual artist’s.

GGM2 is a venue that  presented current art trends from abroad. The exhibitions hosted at the gallery in Powroznicza Street, both group and individual, allow a broad display of artistic phenomena. The events of the “Logos-Bios” cycle focus on the gallery as well: the exhibited sculptures created by Gdansk-based artists or those living in its surroundings creatively depict the dichotomy of the theme-concepts.

The Gdansk City Gallery is more than an exhibition space. Each display is accompanied by a series of parallel events directed towards specific viewers: art school students, children, amateurs of art and many others. Children of various ages take part in workshops covering theory and practice, introducing them to many aspects of contemporary art, the different dimensions of the artist’s job and the activity of the gallery as such.

Contemporary Art Gallery BWA Tarnów

Biuro Wystaw Artystycznych (BWA) in Tarnów is a Municipal Cultural Institution of the city of Tarnów operating in its present form since 1996. It was established in 1962 as the delegacy of BWA in Krakow (today Contemporary Art Gallery Bunkier Sztuki). In 1975 it became an independent institution. The gallery was orginally situated in two locations: the building on Wałowa Street no.10 known for its "Sala Lustrzana" (The Hall Of Mirrors) and apartment house on The Main Square no. 4 in the Pasaż Tertila (Tertil Passage). In the years 2010-2013 the gallery was running an an experimental exhibition space in The Main Railway Station in Tarnów. Simultaneously a major overhaul of a neo-gothic Pałacyk Strzelecki (Strzelecki Palace) located in nineteenth-century Strzelecki Park was carried out. The gallery inaugurated its work in the new building in May 2013. At present the gallery has two main exhibition spaces: a space for temporary exhibitions in Strzelecki Palace and The Main Railway Station with a permanent exhibition presenting works from the collection of the Małopolska Foundation for Muzeum of Contemporary Art „Znaki czasu” (Signs of the Times).

The galery is focused on presenting contemporary art – renowned Polish and foreign artists as well as the most interesting phenomenas of young art and local artists from the city of Tarnów. Every year it organises over 30 exhibitions and art events conducted both in the gallery and public space in Tarnów. As a result local public has the possibility to encounter a vast spectrum of experimental art forms - from exhibitions and concerts to theater performances. In 2011 the Festival took its name after Bogusław Wojtowicz - the long-time director of the gallery and the originator of the Festival.

Moreover, a research programs exploring the contemporary identity of the city and the cultural heritage based on the concepts of modernity of Tarnów and the region are conducted and implemented. The key example of that activity was a project: "Tarnow. 1000 Years of Modernity " recalling the modernist potential of the city of Tarnów and Mościce (2010-2011 www.tarnow1000.pl). On the other hand the project: “OutOf Sight, Out Of Mind. A Cycle Of Exhibition of InternationalContemporary Artists Embracing The Heritage Of Małopolska” was a modern interpretation of four historical themes related to the Małopolska region’s cultural heritage: the youth of Tadeusz Kantor in Tarnów, Zalipie “the painted village”, Romani and Jewish motifs present in the history and culture of the city.

The gallery is also strongly involved in the implementation of a sustainable development of the public space of the city of Tarnow. A city trail "Art andthe City" is a long-term project of the gallery that introduces contemporary art, creates new forms of participation in culture and transforms the city space.
