Mission of the gallery

BWA SOKÓŁ Gallery of Contemporary Art in Nowy Sącz is a department of Małopolska Cultural Centre SOKÓŁ. Its mission is to present and promote contemporary art through various formats and collaborations.
The current focus of the gallery is to build connections between the institution and the local community, integrating local groups and enriching the cultural offer of Nowy Sącz. Those goals are being realized through site-specific projects, residency-based exhibitions, interdisciplinary and participatory strategies among the others. The BWA SOKÓŁ Gallery lean towards an institution in flux, self-reflective and critically responding to the world outside, at the same time aware of its unique location, history and cultural background.

History

BWA SOKÓŁ Gallery of Contemporary Art continues the tradition of Malopolska BWA Nowy Sącz, launched in 1949.
At the beginning of its activity the organisation was lacking a permanent exhibition space. In 1957 local authorities designated a space at Jagiellońska Street to be used for exhibition purposes. The new gallery was managed by the Krakow branch of the BWA. In 1977 that branch was transformed into an independent BWA. In 1991, the gallery moved to Szwedzka Street. In 1999 its name was changed to Małopolska BWA in Nowy Sącz and it became a cultural institution under the supervision of the Marshall Office in Krakow. In this period of its activity the gallery collaborated tightly with Polish Union of Artists and Designers.
In 2009 BWA SOKÓŁ Gallery became part of the Małopolska Cultural Centre SOKOL. From 2010 the gallery has been moved to a new, modern space designed as a western wing of MCK SOKÓŁ and since then it operates as BWA SOKÓŁ Gallery of Contemporary Art.
